This is the standard grade of austenitic stainless chromium-nickel steels and the first commercially available stainless steel (currently accounting for 33% of total production). It is a steel with moderate corrosion resistance and good cold formability. The relatively high carbon tolerance poses a certain risk of chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries during heat treatment, which reduces resistance to intergranular corrosion. Solution annealing is then necessary to dissolve the carbides, followed by rapid quenching to prevent any new precipitation.
For critical applications, 304L steel with a low carbon content is preferable. In environments containing chlorine or salt water, or for products in constant contact with the skin, 316L steel containing molybdenum is more suitable. Severe deformation can cause the steel to become slightly magnetized. This steel is not easy to machine.
It is weldable with and without filler material.
General Properties:
Corrosion resistance - Good
Mechanical Properties – Average
Forgability – Good
Weldability – Excellent
Machinability – Moderate
Main application:
Automotive industry, construction industry, chemical industry, decorative purposes and kitchen furnishings,
Electronic equipment, food industry, mechanical engineering
An austenitic chromium-nickel steel with a slightly lower carbon content, which provides increased resistance to intergranular corrosion. The mechanical properties of 1.4301 and 1.4307 are nearly identical; only the strength values of 1.4307 are slightly lower due to its reduced carbon content.
Material No. 1.4307 is a higher grade material than No. 1.4301. Material No. 1.4307 can be substituted for Material No. 1.4301, but not vice versa.
General Properties:
Corrosion resistance - Good
Mechanical Properties – Average
Forgability – Good
Weldability – Excellent
Machinability – Moderate
Main application:
Automotive industry, construction industry, chemical industry, decorative applications and kitchen furnishings, electronic equipment
Food industry, mechanical engineering
Low-carbon austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel.
Due to its molybdenum content, the material exhibits improved chemical resistance. It cannot be heat-treated.
This steel is easy to form and weld, but it is not easy to machine.
This steel complies with the EN 1811 standard and is suitable for products that come into prolonged contact with the skin.
Suitable for mechanical components with increased corrosion resistance requirements, particularly in chlorine-containing media.
General Properties:
Corrosion resistance – Very good

Main application:
Automotive industry, construction industry, chemical industry, decorative applications and kitchen fixtures, electronic equipment, oil and gas industry/petrochemical industry, food industry, aviation, mechanical engineering, medical and pharmaceutical industry
The corrosion resistance of 316Ti is neither better nor worse than that of 1.4404. The use of 1.4571
compared to 1.4404 is only justified if high-temperature strength is required
